VCAL - Student Achievement Award Winners 2013
Inspired by bicycle maintenance units from their VET Outdoor Recreation studies, this group immediately put their new-found skills to good use. They collected and restored old children's bicycles for donation to Port Augusta-Davenport Aboriginal Community in South Australia.
By advertising in the local press the students accumulated a large number of neglected old bicycles. Benalla police also donated a number of unclaimed stolen Bicycles The team then worked tirelessly to repair the collection, eventually producing over 40 fully restored bikes
The students also held sausage sizzles to raise funds to visit the Davenport Aboriginal Community to deliver the newly refurbished bikes. They conducted careful and thorough planning for the trip, arranging their own accommodation and organising transport and a trailer for the bikes.
Following a 5-day journey to the community the students assembled the bikes and helped out while some of the community children learned to ride. The team were respectful to all the community members they encountered and showed genuine interest in their culture and history.
Once back in Benalla, the students produced a powerpoint presentation about their experience which they delivered at three local primary schools. They also scripted and organised a regional ABC video interview, which was posted on the ABC website and broadcast on ABC news 24.
